THE Awka Capital Territory Development Authority has warned that it will henceforth confiscate wares displayed on the pedestrian bridge at the UNIZIK temporary site.
The Managing Director of the authority, Mr Amaechi Okwuosa, issued the warning on Monday in Awka, while briefing newsmen on the activities of the organisation over the past few weeks.
Okwuosa said that trading on the bridge, which was basically meant for pedestrians to cross over to the other side of the road, was illegal.
He therefore admonished traders, who indulge in the practice, to desist from it or face appropriate sanctions of having their wares confiscated.
According to him, henceforth, control officers from the authority, in collaboration with Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade, will be deployed to enforce the ban.
Okwuosa also said the organisation would engage the services of men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to further ensure total compliance.
“NSCDC had constantly cleared the bridge of traders and alms seekers but they keep coming back.
“Now, more security personnel would be engaged to assist them to achieve success,” he said.
He advised those involved to see the warning as a safety concern, pointing out that criminal elements could take advantage of the crowding on the bridge to perpetrate evil.
Okwuosa also said that he had received a series of reports on the incessant accidents and criminal attacks on passersby in the area.
He, therefore, urged the traders to comply with the order to avoid being forced out by a task force that would be deployed in the area to chase away illegal occupants of the bridge.
“We want to make Awka a 21st Century city and it is a collective responsibility for everyone,” he said. NAN
