THE Labour Party has picked Doyin Okupe as their interim vice-presidential candidate, ahead of the 2023 general election as Peter Obi’s running mate. The party announced this development through a twitter post on June 17..

Okupe is the founder of Royal Cross Medical Centre and was the  National Publicity Secretary of National Republican Convention, NRC. He was also a one-time gubernatorial aspirant in Ogun state under the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

In the tweet, the party mentioned that Okupe was picked as the vice-presidential candidate as a placeholder in order to beat the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the names of political parties presidential and vice-presidential candidates before the end of June 17th. This means that  the party would change their vice-presidential candidate before the general election.

A later tweet by Ikechukwu Iruoma, which was retweeted through the Labour Party’s handle, disclosed that the party is working on a merger and a discussion is ongoing with NNPP, SDP, PRP, etc.
