THE United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has said out of the 5,000 rape cases recorded in Adamawa State last year, only 10 were prosecuted due to a lack of evidence.
Ulla Mueller, UNFPA’s Resident Representative, who was represented by Chris Sabum, Head of the North East, stated this during a capacity-building workshop on forensic verification.
She said the essence of the workshop was to strengthen the system around access to justice through the use of forensic verifications.
Muller disclosed that they had unveiled a forensic lab at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Yola where verifications of samples from perpetrators would be investigated as evidence for court cases.
Speaking at the event, Dr Kizzle Shako, a forensic expert, urged participants to appreciate the role of forensic medicine or science in the management of GBV and how the forensic medics would help the investigators to put together a solid case to secure a conviction and protect the community.
The permanent secretary, ministry of women affairs and social development, Saso Benson Ali, appreciated the efforts made by UNFPA and Spotlight Initiative for the forensic lab adding that with the forensic lab, more perpetrators would be arrested and prosecuted in the court of law.
