Realnews in the Eyes of Others

Realnews magazine was one year old on November 19. The magazine has published 53 weekly issues since its debut. Below is what media professionals and other visitors to our website said about the magazine
Femi Adesina, president, Nigerian Guild of Editors — Realnews magazine is another testimony to the need for versatility by media professionals. Here are journalists we knew with the printed word, who suddenly opted for the online version, and are doing great at it. At one, Realnews is about creativity, about dynamism, about can do, about opening new frontiers, and doing what one loves to do best. I doff my cap. The future can only be written in gold.
Tony Onyima, managing director/editor-in-chief, The Sun Publishing Limited — Congratulations to you and your team on the occasion of the one year anniversary of Realnews magazine. There is no doubt that in the last one year, you have tried to publish real news and analysis online. I have found the news items to be factual, analytical, and investigative. Realnews portal has brought some measure of integrity to online news publishing. The next challenge is how you can build the critical mass for advertising. Congrats.
Omar Farouk Ibrahim, former managing director, New Nigerian Newspaper and general manager, Media Relations, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, — I would like to congratulate the founders, publishers, editors and staff of Realnews magazine on their first anniversary. The Realnews team has earned my respect and admiration because of the professionalism that characterised their reports and commentaries. I am confident that Realnews will grow from strength to strength. All the best.
Eric Osagie, executive director, The Sun Newspapers — Deep in Investigations, written in crisp, free flowing prose; your analysis and features are eloquent testimonies to the calibre of professionals behind your outfit. I can only join others in wishing you and your team more of journalism excellence which has become second nature to you.
Sola Adebawo, manager, communications, Chevron Nigeria Limited — I have found Realnews quite rich in content and profound in depth. Its news reports always go beneath the surface, yet balancing this with a sense of fairness and responsibility.
Goddy Ikeh, chief executive officer/managing editor, Business Eye, and former deputy editor-in-chief, News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, — Congratulations as you mark your one year anniversary in the difficult and predictable sector of ours. You and your team are doing a good job. I wish you all more successful years ahead.
John Araka, former editor of Daily Times, and media consultant, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, — The high quality of the magazine is not unexpected, given the solid professional background of most of its editors. Many of them have over 20 years’ experience in journalism. This is reflected in the dishing out of stories that endeavour to satisfy the much talked about five Ws and H ‘who, when, where, why, what and how in journalism circle. Their attempts at back grounding and balancing stories are also commendable.
“To me the strength of the magazine is mainly in business reporting. It can leverage on this somewhat comparative advantage to appeal to the business community. The benefit of this cannot be overemphasised. I would, however, want the magazine to do a lot more by reporting comprehensively and regularly feature the stock market. This will definitely boost its readership.
Paul Ejime of ECOWAS Commission, Abuja, and former bureau chief/editor, Pan African News Agency, PANA – One year in the life of a project might be too soon to assess its real impact. But as a popular saying goes you could tell a ripe corn by its look. By dint of hard work and unrivalled commitment to excellence, the pioneer staff members of the Realnews Magazine have written their names in the indelible history of journalism. As this baby of circumstance marks its first anniversary, it only suffices to remind the great team behind Nigeria’s first online news magazine that it is often harder to remain at the top than getting there in the first place. Your biggest challenge now is how to retain the support of the vast followership you have achieved within a short period of the magazine’s existence and win more readerships. Hearty congratulations, and many more successful years ahead.
