MIXED reactions have continued to trail the call by the National Assembly for the redeployment of Joseph Mbu, Rivers State commissioner of police. Many Nigerians are of the opinion that the call will impact on public servants negatively, while others are in support of the call. Below are the positions of some Nigerians on the issue.
Christian Ifeanyi, Graduate: My take is, since you have two individuals who cannot work and understand themselves, they should part ways. And in this case, the commissioner should go elsewhere since it is not possible for the governor to do so. This does not make the commissioner a loser. It should be done in the interest of the people of the state.
Ozoemena Alumona, Politician: Yes he might be doing his professional duty or whatever you want to call it, the truth remains that there is no peace in the state. The frosty relationship between the Rivers State governor and the state commissioner of police is not healthy for democracy. No police commissioner can function effectively in any state without a cordial relationship with the state governor. So, Joseph Mbu needs to go for the sake of peace.
Chukwudi Idukpo, Engineer: I think Joseph Mbu, Rivers State commissioner of police, is doing his official duties. The National Assembly and the state government should allow the police commissioner, who has been at the peak of his professional career in the state, to ensure that lives and properties are secured, and concentrate on the development of the state and Nigeria at large.
Alex Ejiofor, Businessman: How do the National Assembly and Governor Amaechi know that the transfer of the state commissioner of police will stop the crisis in Rivers state? I think the call for redeployment of the commissioner will not encourage public servants and the commissioner in the discharge of their duties professionally. Our leaders should learn how to manage a crisis situation so that it does not to snowball into unmanageable proportions. The political situation in Rivers state is in no doubt charged, but it is not beyond the handling of the state governor.
Peter Idu, Public Servant: This is just a case in point against those advocating for state police. By now the commissioner would have been sacked, simply because the governor no longer likes his face or he perceives him to be disloyal. And for the fear of being branded disloyal and sacked, the commissioner would always dance to the governor’s tune and even unleash mayhem on his opponents.
Paullo Dieke, Public Servant: The National Assembly has no power to command the IG to change the commissioner; there are lines of communication. If the commissioner is guilty according to those calling for his deployment, there are procedures of reporting his bad deeds through the normal channel of communication. You don’t call for the removal of a public officer through the media, there are proper procedures of complaints in the civil service, and thank God we don’t have a state police.
