THE Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has charged the newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs to focus on ensuring credible elections in the country.
Speaking at an induction retreat for the new RECs in Lagos, Yakubu emphasized the importance of acquainting themselves with the processes and procedures of the Commission.
He also urged the veteran RECs to share their field experience to mitigate recurring challenges in the electoral process.
The INEC Chairman highlighted the Commission’s commitment to credible and inclusive elections, noting that there are four major elections before the next General Election in 2027.
He expressed appreciation for the support of Development Associates Inc., DAI, and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, IFES in promoting transparent and inclusive electoral processes in Nigeria.
The retreat, which is the fifth organized by INEC in two years, aims to review performance, reappraise processes, discuss innovations and engage with lawmakers on critical areas of reform.
With elections held all-year round in Nigeria, Yakubu emphasized the need for continued improvement in the electoral process, urging the RECs to focus on innovative solutions to mitigate challenges in voter registration, election security, and political party management, among others.
The retreat is expected to provide a platform for the new RECs to engage with National Commissioners, directors and other officials of the Commission, as well as development partners, to ensure improved service delivery in the electoral process.
