The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency (LSMTL) is seeking review of the reporting methodology of testing building/ construction materials.

The General Manager of the agency, Mrs Olayinka Abdul, made this known at a workshop organised for the agency’s  technical consultants on Friday in Lagos.

The workshop was organised in collaboration with the Association of Consulting Engineers for Nigeria.

It had the theme, “A Deep Dive into Cutting Edge Evaluation Testing and Reporting Standards for Technical Consultants”.

Abdul said that the aim of the review was to identify and address any shortcomings in the tessting and reporting processes  that might contribute to building collapse.

She said, ” Building collapse is an embarrassment to the level of professionalism exuded by qualified engineers within the metropolis owing to their years of practice; hence, the need for a reviewed reporting methodology of testing building/ construction materials.

“The reporting of materials testing and its methodology require urgent review.

“Lagos State, known for its excellence, has unfortunately experienced consistent building collapse, which tarnishes the reputation of its professionals.

” As the foundation of the built industry, LSMTL must implement strategies to prevent such incidents.”

She said that the training would enhance the participants’ knowledge of testing standards and reporting methods.

Abdul said that the training focused on the importance of soil testing, the need for visual inspection and importance of accurate reporting.

She disclosed that the agency had also set up a verification portal for test results to ensure accuracy and authenticity.

She said that reports from the agency would henceforth be watermarked with seal and codes to curb counterfeiting.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Works,  Mr Odusanya Ayodeji, urged technical consultants to collaborate with the agency to ensure  safety of buildings.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards in material testing and construction practices to prevent building collapse.(NAN)
